GOING FOR AN INTERVIEW? 6 TOP TIPS FOR WHAT TO WEAR (AND WHAT NOT TO)
During an interview, the best thing we can do for ourselves is to create the right first impression. Whether we like it or not, how you are viewed at the first glance has a massive impact on the success of your job interview. So here are a few pointers to help you dress and look the part for an interview;
6 TIPS FOR DRESSING PROPERLY FOR AN INTERVIEW
- Research the company's values and codes
The best thing you can do if you don't know any employees to give you pointers on dressing is to either browse online or call their HR department.
Dress codes vary from industry to industry, but usually, even if the company favors casual wares, they might want you to look a little official at first.
- Come neat and well-groomed
As repeatedly stated already, first impressions are king when it comes to job interviews as you most likely are not the only candidate.
Thus, don't let poor hygiene be your downfall amongst fierce rivals, clean(and comb if needed) your hair, trim your beards, and keep your fingernails tidy. No one cares that you've been too busy, remember, you will have to shake your interview with those hands.
- Ignore the impulse to overcompensate
Whatever it is you decide to put on for your dream interview, you might feel a little nervous or lacking and want to compensate with certain embellishments.
That's a normal reaction to an interview but ensure to disregard that voice, you don't need to douse yourself in cologne or wear all your makeup at once, in these cases, the minimum is always recommended.
- Footwear is also important
Normally, this will fall under the canopy of outfits, but it seems people tend to forget that what shoes you put on matters too. They complement whatever amazing outfit you have if used properly. The guys can do much worse than a simple pair of loafers and low heels with covered toes should do for the ladies.
- Make sure your clothes are pressed and clean
There's no point wearing the recommended attire for your interview if you don't take the time to get it properly cleaned and pressed.
If you are not skilled in this department, you can ask a friend or sibling to help you out with it. Even if you are dead broke and depressed, there's no need for your potential future employers to know that.
- Dress comfortably
You know that there's a reason why 'Hiring managers' are "Hired" right? They are skilled professionals in judging individuals by non-vocal signs of nervousness and anxiety-like body language, facial expression, posture, etc.
This is why you need to wear something you feel comfortable and powerful in to give you that extra 'zing' for the meeting.
FINALLY...
At the workplace and in society in general, you are addressed by how you dress, understanding this simple point will help you make more informed decisions about what to wear to where.
Remember though that your outfit is just part of what determines your success in the interview, other factors include job qualification, manners, reputation, and communication skills, so don't skimp on those too. Good luck with getting that dream job! I know you can do it.
